Seeing as Universal Pictures has put the kabash on Guillermo Del Toro’s Mountains of Madness project. Student works are probably the best we’re ever going to get when it comes to H.P. Lovecraft’s novella, At The Mountains of Madness. The animation isn’t much to talk about but they do a good job of presenting the story.
Also, an apology for not having a more substantial post today. California’s budgetary issues got in the way of me writing on the Internet. I hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July holiday (for those of you in the United States). Everyone else, hope you have a good weekend.
Last Wednesday (6/10/09) there was a fairly large protest (maybe as many as at the tea party) on the north steps of the state Capitol in California. People from all over the state came to protest Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed cuts to state programs that offer subsidized medication to Californians with the HIV or AIDS… I got it all on camera!
I spent all week trying to make a damn flowchart for my Civics post… No, luck as every program I used wanted money to export or the UI was unintelligible. I’m still working on it and as soon as I have something it’ll be up here.
Last Wednesday (6/10/09) there was a fairly large protest (maybe as many as at the tea party) on the north steps of the state Capitol in California. People from all over the state came to protest Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed cuts to state programs that offer subsidized medication to Californians with the HIV or AIDS… and I was there to capture it with my Flip Mino! Cutting the video into numerous sections and posting it on to Youtube is what took the rest of the week… I’ve also been dealing with planning for a wedding and such (no, you’re not invited… yet. If you’re reading this I’m sure you probably will be at some point, you can email me if you have questions…), so the blog hasn’t received the attention it usually gets.
I recorded about an hour of the protest and was able to get 9 speeches, 8 of them by State Legislators all of whom were Democrats. I’d speak about the state budget but this isn’t the place for it and there isn’t one yet to look over and comment on. The legislative conference committee is still reviewing the Governor’s constantly revised budget… I think that mid next week the Senate and Assembly will start to take the budget up and as they do I’ll comment then. Back to the subject at hand, below you’ll find some of the videos I posted on youtube, here is the link to all of them:
This is 30 minutes before the protest and I just walk-through and look at the signs… shortly there after my Mino froze (I fixed it)
I’m showing this one because I appreciate Assemblyman Ammiano’s candor and no-nonsense approach
As I said the rest are on Youtube at the link above and you can watch them there at your leisure…
I just finished watching the King of Kong sans any of the special features which might update the story a little. All I can say is that Billy Mitchell is a coward. That, and I don’t know why I find myself caring so much about Donkey Kong. But, I do and that is the power of this documentary that chronicles the goal of a laid off middle aged American man trying to make his life have some meaning… and his struggle to enter into the somewhat obscure and very “selective” world of classic video game records. Not going to say anything more, just that this is a great character study and a wonderful story of good vs. evil
I just came back from seeing it. There is nor need for me to review this movie. If you are now or have ever been a Simpsons fan you are going to like this movie. If you’ve never watched the show (WHO ARE YOU?!?!) the movie isn’t going to do anything for you, you’ll laugh but that’s it. Fan or not a fan its funny. If you haven’t gotten it yet, you’re never going to.
There are plenty of little easter bunnies in the film for long time fans, things that will make you laugh, only if you’re well versed in lore, but they’re not intrusive. You don’t need to know the Simpsons to appreciate Groening’s humor. Oh, yeah Groening wrote the script, which is good. I think for the television show he’s only a consultant anymore. I sometimes wonder if this move by him and the other creators wasn’t an attempt to end it all, like in the Producers… The movie isn’t as edgy as the Simpsons used to be, though Groening is spot on with some of the social commentary. I don’t see how any show in it’s 15th season can stay edgy anyhow. The people who used to complain about the show and what it was doing to culture are no where to be found anymore and the show has become an icon, a stay of television. How different it was in the early 90’s…
