Cocktail of the Week: Tequila Sunrise

I know, I know that looks nothing like a Tequila Sunrise… I guess my homemade grenadine isn’t think enough? So instead of sinking to the bottom it suffused into the drink? When I first poured it in it looked right, maybe I just waited too long before taking the picture? So, let’s call this a Los Angeles Tequila Sunrise? Nice and muddy looking through all that smog! Anyway, Tequila Sunrises are perfect summer drinks. Also, perfect morning drinks but you didn’t hear that from me! To the cocktail!

The ingredients

Tequila Sunrise

  • 3 oz. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine

Pour the orange juice and tequila into an ice filled collins glass. Slowly pour grenadine into mix, the weight of the grenadine (should) make it sink to the bottom leaving some rather lovely red/pink trails through the orange juice. Garnish with a orange wedge.

Again, mine doesn’t look quite as it should. But, it did taste lovely. The acidity of the oj, the sweet tartness of the grenadine and the sharp alcoholic taste of tequila. Ah, what a delicious cocktail! As I said at the beginning. Enjoy for breakfast or as an aperitif before dinner! If you have a poolside or ocean side view even better! Enjoy the summer it’s going to get too hot soon!

EDIT: I think I figured out why my Tequila Sunrise looked so muddy. I transposed the figures for tequila and orange juice… Leaving me with a very boozy but not very bright cocktail.

Cocktail of the Week: Le Fizz

Le FizzLe Fizz seemed like the perfect spring cocktail. Limes, elderflowers, some vodka all with a little fizzy. Light and easy. Just the thing you need to start a hectic week and to end an simple weekend.

The ingredients

Le Fizz

  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz.  elderflower liqueur
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz. soda water

In a cocktail shaker, mix together vodka, elderflower liqueur and lime juice. Add ice, cover and shake vigorously. Pour into Collins glass or champagne flute. Top with soda water. Garnish with lime.

Le Fizz

This was good. I think, depending on the size of the Collins glass, I might want to make it a double in the future. The recipe above worked but it was a little light on flavor. I will admit though that while sipping this I wished I had a poolside to be sitting at instead of getting ready for work…

Cocktail of the Week: The Presbyterian

Sorry, for the lack of updates. Life gets in the way sometimes. Despite not posting I have still been trying new cocktails. This week’s is a simple, yet satisfying, one. The Presbyterian is bourbon and ginger beer with a dash of bitters on ice. Quick, easy, refreshing, the perfect cocktail for drinking after a busy day at the office.

The Presbyterian

  • 2 oz. bourbon whiskey
  • 4-6 oz. ginger beer
  • 4 dashes bitters
  • candied ginger

Fill a highball glass with ice, add bourbon. Fill glass near top with ginger beer, add bitters. Stir and garnish with candied ginger on a cocktail pick.

The Presbyterian is the kind of drink that makes me wish I had a back porch, or a front porch, or even just a lawn chair I could set up and take in a beautiful view while sipping this in the drink on a warm spring evening.

Ah well, something to work for I suppose… Hope you have the time this week to enjoy a cocktail!

Cocktail of the Week: Anna’s Banana

Anna's Banana

It’s been unseasonably warm this month. This weekend the weather got into the high eighties! That isn’t very hot, it’s downright pleasant, but it isn’t the weather I normally associate with March but with the May or June. With the weather as warm as its been I didn’t see any reason to wait until the Summer to start making summer drinks. I also happened to have some bananas that were getting ripe and so I started looking for something that would be cool, refreshing, and have some bananas in it. I found Anna’s Banana

Anna’s Banana

  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 tsp. honey

Slice banana and put into blender. Add vodka, lime juice, and honey to blender. Add cracked ice to blender and blend on medium for about 10-15 seconds. Serve in a chilled white wine glass. Garnish with lime wedge.

Anna’s Banana was cool and refreshing. It was also very smooth. There isn’t much more I can say about it though. It hardly had any taste at all. I might have put in too much ice or not enough honey? I did notice that when I pored the drink out of the blender there was honey below the blender blade. In the future I think I will use honey simple syrup instead of pure honey; I think it would blend better. For my first blended drink this was kind of a bust. I’m hoping future cocktails will be more noteworthy!
