It’s once again that most joyous, and stressful, time of the year. Yes, that’s right, the Winter Solstice! The shortest day of the year! I suppose there are some other holidays people celebrate but I don’t really know… I do know that winter holidays means that Festivus is once again upon us! And, as I have for the last four years I participated in Talking Time‘s Gift Exchange.
As it has been every other year it was a wonderful experience! Many thanks to Botticus for the gifts!
Things started with a package:
I wasn’t expecting anything in the mail. All of my holiday shopping was done weeks ago. An email message from my secret Santa told me that my gift was delivered early, so I assumed this must be it!
Inside was this note and a collection of balsa wood that looked like one of those old balsa wood model plane kits:
Neat! This is board game aid. You put it inside the board game box and it keeps all the various pieces, cards, dice, etc., nice and neat. If you have any collection of board games at all you know how organizing the pieces into the box can be a real nightmare!
There is also some small joy in putting the thing together. It’s like LEGOs or IKEA but not:
The game this was for is Lords of Waterdeep, a fun worker management game with a Dungeon and Dragons skin. There’s even room now for the expansion to the game (which usually requires its very own box!)
I received another email shortly after putting the organizer together telling me I had a gift waiting for me in STEAM. As if I don’t have a large enough backlog of video games to get through…
I opened my Steam client and found a copy of Dreamfall Chapters waiting for me. I’ve played through the original Dreamfall, The Longest Journey, and loved it. It’s a deeply atmospheric adventure game that explores technology, art, creativity, and how they all relate and interact with each other. I’ve wanted to play the sequel and give this new version a try for some time!
Thanks again to Botticus for contributing to the joy of this year’s Winter Solstice holiday season!
